Eurasian Whimbrel
This piece features the Eurasian Whimbrel, a striking migratory shorebird known for its gracefully curved bill and bold crown stripes. Breeding in Arctic tundra and wintering across distant coastlines in Africa, Australasia, and South America, the whimbrel undertakes one of the longest migratory journeys of any shorebird species. It is most commonly found along tidal flats, saltmarshes, and coastal wetlands, where it feeds on invertebrates by delicately probing the mud with its specialized bill.
This original work was sent to New Zealand as part of The Overwintering Project’s Wall of Wings — an international community-based installation that brings together bird prints from contributors around the world to raise awareness for migratory shorebirds.
The Wall of Wings is more than an installation — it is a rare and meaningful tribute to the endurance of migratory birds and the ecosystems that sustain them.
